Crafting Mountain Elegance: Taj Theog’s Architectural Symphony

Studio Lotus, responding to the late architect Pradeep Sachdeva’s invitation, embarked on a transformative journey to infuse deliberate mountain house warmth into Taj Hotels’ inaugural venture in Himachal Pradesh.

Taj Theog, a luxurious retreat perched at 2310m altitude on the outskirts of Theog, unfolds across three linear buildings on a hilltop, promising a hospitality experience that is more human, service-oriented, and deeply rooted in local connections.

Sitting on a ridge in the Himalayan foothills at an altitude of 2310m, the Taj is a luxury getaway located in the sleepy town of Theog developed using the vernacular Kath-Khunistyle of building. Against a backdrop of dry masonry walls and slate-shingled roofs, Studio Lotus has designed public spaces within the hotel by adapting the traditional wood-carving and brass-work techniques of the Himachali people as spatial markers.

The design scheme evokes traditional gestures associated with hospitality and home-like warmth, by contemporizing elements from the vernacular built lexicon. The prime showcase for this approach has been the hotel lobby, where as taggered metal screen punctuated by suspended timber spindles recreates the welcoming gesture of Himachali homes in a modern format, as well as helps break the large expanse of space into smaller, more intimate pockets. The scale of the space has been further modulated through the use of a warm material palette of pine wood and slate, as well as intricate geometric patterns in the tiles and wooden panelling, which add visual density.

Research and local insight played a pivotal role in shaping the architectural expression, drawing inspiration from vernacular elements. The design aimed to reinterpret the narrative of a mountainside home, employing a tight palette of locally sourced materials to create a quiet and spartan spatial experience.

The public spaces, spread across three levels to complement the stepped profile of the site, reflect a careful blend of contemporary design and regional reinterpretations. Timber-clad ceilings, slate floors with custom patterns, and strategically placed art forms define the primary palette. Noteworthy is the meticulous use of crafted timber and stone elements, echoing traditional mountain hospitality and warmth.

The lobby, a focal point with extensive footfall, seamlessly transitions into a lounge area, creating an intimate space for patrons to unwind. A nod to the region’s architectural heritage is seen in the lobby’s tall screens and carved patterns, evoking the feeling of a small living room with a library—a sanctuary for guests.

The design extends into the all-day dining area, featuring warm, tactile, pale grey local stone cladding and large glass panes connecting to outdoor spaces. The thoughtful use of solid wood furniture, crafted timber, and unique lighting fixtures adds warmth and character to the monochromatic space.

The specialty restaurant, Peony, showcases a sculptural, ceramic cladding system inspired by Asian influences and local earthenware traditions. The intricate ceramic walls define private seating pockets, offering an immersive dining experience overlooking the valley.

On the lower levels, leisure spaces like the spa, treatment rooms, gym, and crèche integrate seamlessly into the natural surroundings. Lighter hues, terrazzo floors, and narrative elements depicting local flora and fauna create a contemplative atmosphere.

The overall design approach maintains a neutral backdrop, allowing the hotel’s team to enhance the everyday experience for clientele. Taj Theog stands as a testament to Studio Lotus’ meticulous research and architectural prowess, crafting an elegant retreat that harmonizes with the natural beauty of Himachal Pradesh.
